Friends of the Chicago River
Friends of the Chicago River's grantee project focuses on improving the ecological health of the Little Calumet River and North Shore Channel during the summer through native water willow and lizard's tail plant installations, primarily carried out during their Paddle and Plants events. These plantings serve to provide essential food and shelter for local aquatic and animal species, mitigate the impact of frequent flooding due to climate change, and strengthen riverbanks in areas near highly paved regions. This initiative addresses the lack of native plants in these artificial or manipulated waterways while aligning with broader regional restoration efforts. Partnerships with organizations like the Shedd Aquarium and the engagement of diverse river-edge communities underscore the project's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Grant funding from the Schwemm Family Foundation supported plant purchases and essential supplies, furthering Friends of the Chicago River's mission of environmental stewardship and conservation.
